Peru, a country in South America, is situated on the western side of the continent, facing the South Pacific Ocean. The landscape is made up of three distinct features: firstly, the beautiful beaches that snake along the coastline overlooked by the capital city of Lima. Secondly, the great Andes separate the beaches from the rest of the country. This mountain range boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in South America and are home to the indigenous highlanders, who still speak the ancient tongue of Quechua and live a traditional way of life. Finally, to the east of the mountains lies the jungle of the Amazon River Basin. Peru also has much heritage to be discovered including the lost city of Machu Picchu, near Cuzco. This ancient city was constructed by the Incas and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
