Turkey stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in western Asia but part of the country is also in south-eastern Europe. Seas on three sides encircle the country: the Aegean Sea to the west, the Black Sea to the north and the Mediterranean Sea to the south. Turkey has a unique location astride two continents so can boast a unique culture combining Eastern and Western traditions. Remnants of the traditional Bynzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire can be seen throughout the country. In the cities traditional buildings, palaces and mosques are juxtaposed with modern skyscrapers.
