Set in the famous Douro port wine region in northern Portugal, Oporto is the country's second-largest metropolis after Lisbon and the capital of the north. The age-old city, which gave the country (and port wine) its name, has been inhabited since at least the 4th century. The old town, centered at Ribeira, was built into the granite cliffs at the mouth of the Douro river and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Oporto’s architecture is a perfect combination of modern and medieval, with an array of architectural gems from the Renaissance era alongside cutting edge construction.
