Carcassonne is built on both sides of the River Aude in the south of France. On the north of the river the original hilltop CitĂ© still stands. This is a spectacular walled town – the largest medieval town in Europe with its city walls intact. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the setting for many films featuring medieval castles. The thirteenth century Bastide occupies the south bank. The city is close to the quaint fishing village of Collioure and near the Lezignan Corbieres region that is famous for its fine wines.
