Avignon, located in south-eastern France on the left bank of the Rhone River, is also known as the City of the Popes. Its history is dominated by the legacy of Popes who lived there through the ages. The impressive Palace of the Popes is a must-see. Theatres, parks and bridges can be seen all over the city. Parts of the medieval bridge, Pont d’Avignon, can still be seen across the Rhone River.
